When people talk about the Renaissance, they usually mean the cultural awakening that took place in Europe between the 14th and 16th Centuries. But did you know that the word "Renaissance" has come to be used in connection with any widespread re-awakening of culture?

A recent Renaissance that took place in America is the Harlem Renaissance. This Renaissance, which took place between 1920 and 1930, was an awakening of culture among black Americans. It began in two sections of Manhattan, Greenwich Village and Harlem, and it was also known as "The New Negro Movement." African Americans contributed tremendously to culture during this time period. In all areas--literature, music, and art--black Americans were encouraged to express their heritage as something special and unique.
