Connecting the Dots: Aligning Content to Your Curriculum

Teachers learn the role of literacy in the comprehension of subject‐area content. They learn how to create an effective unit with specific goals and objectives and how to select appropriate articles, writing activities, graphic organizers, and more to ensure that the unit is robust and will enrich the students’ learning experience. Teachers also create their own cross‐curricular units.


Now I Get It! Reading Comprehension Across the Content Areas
Format:
Time: 3 hours

Teachers discover effective ways to teach students the seven Key Comprehension Strategies needed for students to become proficient readers of nonfiction text. They learn how to integrate effective reading comprehension strategies using Achieve3000 articles and textbooks. Participants will develop custom lesson plans.


The Difference is Data: Informed Decisions in the Classroom (Sept.)
Format:
Time: 3 hours

A hands-on analysis of the data for a particular classroom. The analysis will help the teacher identify strengths and weaknesses and plan targeted interventions. Participants will also take an in-depth look at the administrative tools that support individualized instruction.


Engage and Motivate Your KidBiz3000 Students (Jan.’11)

Time: On-site – 3 hours; Virtual Classroom – 90 minutes

The Achieve3000 programs are designed to motivate and encourage elementary school students to read more and engage with text in ways that strengthen their comprehension and vocabulary skills. Teachers discover ways to use the powerful motivational tools within the system as well as how to create a classroom environment that facilitates this enthusiasm for reading at both an individual and class level.

Teachers learn the best practices available through this powerful tool. Participants explore ways to use the Curriculum Key to enrich and extend the learning experience with students for each daily article.


Using Achieve3000 E-mail: Advanced Features
Format:
Time: self-paced

Teachers learn to use the advanced features of the Achieve3000 e-mail system to send new e-mails not related to the article, create e-mail groups, view scheduled e-mail assignments in Sent Mail, delete unwanted e-mails, create new folders, and manage e-mail communities.


How to Increase Your First-Try Scores (Oct.)
Format:
Time: self-paced

An Achieve3000 Implementation Manager models how to increase first-try scores by reading carefully when reading the article and when answering the multiple choice questions. Modeling includes how to eliminate distractors and how to refer to the article.


1on1: Analyzing Reports

Format:
Time: 45-60 minutes

Teachers learn which Achieve3000 reports can help identify student challenges. Teachers analyze that data to address specific instructional goals.


Introduction to the Curriculum Key

Teachers learn about the components of the Curriculum Key and how they can be used to enrich and extend instruction in the classroom for both whole-group and small-group instruction.


1on1: Expanding the Five Steps

Teachers learn ways to expand the instruction and learning experience within each of the Five Steps. They work with an Achieve3000 consultant to determine best strategies for customizing the instructional experience within each of the steps.


Focus On: Pre-Reading Strategies

An Achieve3000 Implementation Manager models how to integrate effective pre-reading strategies into the Achieve3000 lesson by teaching a hands-on lesson. Teachers watch and evaluate live classroom video demonstrating the use of pre-reading strategies “in action.”


Focus On: Powerful During-Reading Techniques

An Achieve3000 Implementation Manager models how to integrate effective during-reading strategies into the Achieve3000 lesson. These strategies will ensure students are actively involved with the text and are using their metacognitive skills.


Focus On: After-Reading Activities with Punch

An Achieve3000 Implementation Manager models how to integrate effective after-reading strategies into the Achieve3000 lesson. Teachers learn ways to check for understanding, extend the learning across the curriculum, and more.


Unit Building

Format:

Teachers learn to use the Unit Building function to select a group of articles around a specific theme, topic, concept, strategy, or standard and how to set the unit to be automatically delivered to students.


Assigning Intervention Activities to Your Students (Nov.)

Teachers learn to use the reports in the Achieve3000 programs to identify students who are struggling with specific strategies and/or standards and how to assign intervention activities to groups of students or individual students.
